STREET TREES

65" × 60"

My neighborhood is the inspiration behind this quilt. All of the streets are lined with trees and all the streets are full of life — usually kids playing, riding bikes, walking to the pool, etc. I wanted to make a simple quilt playing on the idea of street trees filled with life. The design is simple — three rows of street trees standing along a street. The trees are very simple in design, and nothing is exact about them — just nice, easy and relaxed. The trees are all free-cut based on a general size. The edges are turned and then appliquéd to the background one row at a time.

Finding fabric for this quilt was fun, to say the least. It’s the perfect application for all of those strong, graphic animal prints. I chose a different fabric for each treetop without any consideration to the color. I tried to stick with medium-size prints. This would be a great time to collect fabric with friends — ¼ yard of fabric makes four treetops. I chose an off-gray for the street. A solid brown for the trunks because I wanted the treetops to stand out, not the trunks. For the background, I went with a simple yet graphic print in yellow, thinking of sunny days in the neighborhood.
